Talya Blaine writes poignant, thought-provoking romance featuring characters over forty and swoon-worthy, caring, “nice guy” male leads. Her stories range from sweet(ish), closed-door romance to fogged-up doors wide open—the characters and stories decide, the author… not so much. (Hint: You’ll find light, pastel covers on her closed-door stories and darker, moodier covers on the steamy ones.)

The first, the kettle ponds of Cape Cod, from The Paper Palace by Miranda Cowley-Heller. I reviewed this book on my blog, and as I wrote there, I can still see in my mind the mossy bank by the secret spring. What would I do? Sit on the soft bright green moss, dip my toes in the water, write, take a nap.

Next, from Yerba Buena by Nina LaCour, I'd like to visit Long Beach and see Emilie's Ocean Avenue mansion, with its high ceilings and bold kitchen backsplash and then drive around with her and Randy to look at homes for her next flip. At the end of the day, we'd stop wherever Sara is working behind the bar and try one of her drinks, something with a homemade syrup and garnish of caramelized orange peel.

While in California, I'd visit Carrie Soto's compound, watch her practice with Bowe and, since I have played very little tennis in my life, muster enough courage to ask her if she would give me a short lesson.

As I was writing one of the later scenes in the previous book, Silently, the scene where Quinn is in the hospital and Jonathan climbs into bed with her and they talk – really talk – I realized there was too much growing between them for their story to end. After I finished writing Silently, that feeling continued – I could not get Quinn and Jonathan out of my head. So I began writing Secretly, and the two of them took it from there.
